The centralwOrld Bangkok Countdown is Thailand's biggest New Year's Eve party: a free outdoor show at the Ratchaprasong intersection with live concerts, a midnight fireworks display over the mall and crowds of hundreds of thousands.
Check in before midday on 31 December. Last year Ratchadamri Road between Pratunam and Ratchaprasong closed to traffic from noon until 5am, so taxis could not reach hotels on that stretch.

Its rooftop venues, Red Sky (levels 55–56) and CRU Champagne Bar (level 59), sell ticketed New Year's Eve parties overlooking the fireworks, and you don't need to be a hotel guest to book. For a view from your room, ask the hotel for a high floor facing Ratchaprasong and get it confirmed – views are not guaranteed by room type.
The other big one is the Amazing Thailand Countdown at ICONSIAM, with fireworks over the Chao Phraya river. Asiatique The Riverfront, New Year's Eve river cruises and rooftop bars such as Vertigo, Sky Bar at Lebua and Octave also hold countdown events, most of them ticketed. If CentralWorld is your plan, stay near Ratchaprasong; for the river, look at hotels in Sathorn or along the riverside.
For last year's countdown, Ratchadamri Road between Pratunam and Ratchaprasong closed from noon on 31 December until 5am on 1 January. Sections of Rama I, Ratchadamri, Phloen Chit, Ratchaprarop and Phetchaburi roads closed from 4pm to 2am. Police publish this year's closures in late December.
Take the BTS to Chit Lom or Siam and walk along the skywalk. After midnight, stations are very busy and taxis cannot reach the closed roads, so a hotel within walking distance is the easiest option.
